  21. I have two, and it has been quite a ride getting them working. The
  22. data and fax portions have worked fine from the start, except at a
  23. serial line rate of 57K at which characters are echoed but the modem
  24. does not respond but about 1 in 3 times. USR has told me they are
  25. looking at this, as there should be some ROMs on the way to me to
  26. test.

  28. The voicemail has been something else. If you follow this group for
  29. awhile, you will note that many people complained about low message
  30. playback volume and lots of noise, which I'm also experiencing. Some
  31. people have said that this makes the voicemail unusable. With the
  32. software volume all the way up, I can hear the messages by placing my
  33. ear over the top of the modem about 1 foot away. There is a bug that
  34. makes voicemail unreliable at serial line speeds above 38.4K, which
  35. Smith has indicated will be fixed.

  37. Don't expect to use your sound card for recording an outgoing message,
  38. or for playback. QL does not support this at this time, although
  39. virtually all other non-USR voice modems do.

  41. The most disappointing thing with this whole endeavor has been USR's
  42. non-existant support. I waited nigh unto a month to even get a
  43. response after trying FAX, tech support's toll "wait" line, internet
  44. e-mail, and their BBS. I found out about problems and fixes from
  45. others first, not from USR. The problems themselves should have been
  46. caught in testing, which is also disappointing.

  48. The modem makes a fine data and fax modem. The only other dislike I
  49. have is the cheezy case and the light pipes used for the status lights
  50. which, when the modem is not viewed head-on, make it look like all the
  51. lights are on.
